Dave (The UK TV channel with an interesting name) has only just gone and cancelled video game TV show / torment the ‘D’ list celebrities who have never played a video game in their life’ Dara O Briain’s Go 8 Bit after just three series.
Ironically the information first came from the Dave Twitter account, in response to a viewer who wondered if Go 8 Bit would return.
Go 8 Bit starred presenter and comedian Dara O Briain, who hosted a selection of ‘celebrities’ faced head to head challenges over 5 rounds alongside captains Steve McNeil and Sam Pamphilon, the original creators of Go 8 Bit. Gaming reviewer, comedian and dead pan queen Ellie Gibson was on hand each round to remind us of the games plot, gameplay elements, and to give the ‘celebs’ (god I really don’t want to use that word any more!) an idea of what to do.
With series 2 and 3 filmed at the same time, the clue was there that Dave was stockpiling episodes during the initial production run, and with the DLC show being dropped after series 1 there appeared no planes to make games a focus outside of comedy puns and cheap laughs from trial and error fails during gameplay.
With newer games missing their moment to shine on a series designed to take challenges to their peak in a similar vein to Gamesmaster of old. It seems another chapter has been put in the case as to why games will never be successful on TV.
Dave were contacted by TRVG earlier today over their comments to which we recieved the following reply:
My heart goes out To Sam and Steve (and the crew) behind the show, here’s hoping it moves to another channel in a more concrete form as to how the Edinburgh Fringe version originally showed us.
