Welcome to EXPlay, (Explain & Play) the review series where we care not for scores but tell it how it is when it comes to every game we get our hands on, whilst also taking the time to include some lengthy gameplay, to give you the reader, the chance to shape your own impressions and views whilst watching and reading. In this installment, we’re covering Kitaria Fables by developer Twin Hearts.
Kitaria Fables: (The Explanation)
Kitaria Fables has hit the Nintendo Switch as a role-playing, action-adventure game. You are entrusted with a farm and a town to save; therefore, checking a lot of boxes in my favorite gameplay list. You start off the game with very little in terms of direction and information, but after a short introduction to the world and a few characters, you begin your quest to save Paw Village.
Armed with a sword you will fight off hordes of bouncing slimes, dangerous sword and shield-wielding enemies, spiders, and more. There are quests and side quests given to you to progress the story and build friendships with neighbors. Some of these tasks require you to travel to various parts of the map, which do have a fast travel system, but early on in the game, you will have to walk to each destination.
Within each section of the world, you will come across enemies that you can fight in real-time either using your sword or various attack and magical abilities. Each of these has a cool-down applied to them so you can not spam the attacks. Attacks range from quick slashes and stronger blows and magical abilities range consist of fireballs for ranged attacks and more as the game progresses.
On top of the RPG-like fighting mechanics and real-time attacking and magic use, you can also craft items and farm near your house. Farming allows for you to grow crops to sell as well, which can be used in turn to upgrade powerful weapons and armor. The farming is akin to Star Dew Valley or Harvest Moon games. Paw Coins, the currency of the game, are also found throughout the world by defeating enemies and opening chests.
You can play through Kitaria Fables alongside a friend in local co-op, though I did not get a chance to try that out during my EXPlay. I did however get to search through a few areas which all were vibrant and detailed and filled with secrets to find like treasure chests and caves. Sometimes these caves led to dangerous encounters with boss creatures, like a giant mushroom that I found early on in the game.
The art style of Kitaria Fables is similar to Animal Crossing with cute animal characters. Their dialogue is presented within subtly animated hand-drawn-looking avatars which move in accordance with the dialogue. There are dialogue options in the game, but those do not seem to affect the overall story, just small changes within characters’ responses to you.
I did find the game to be fun and enjoyable. Kitaria Fables seems like a great introduction to RPG game mechanics for a younger audience and the overall game is geared towards children. I had found though and I think, if you like games in this genre you will as well. If you aren’t expecting gruesome battles or blood, and you just want a relaxing RPG experience, Kitaria Fables will fill that void.
