Welcome to EXPlay, (Explain & Play) the review series where we care not for scores but tell it how it is when it comes to every game we get our hands on, whilst also taking the time to include some lengthy gameplay, to give you the reader, the chance to shape your own impressions and views whilst watching and reading. In this installment, we’re covering CRYSIS Remastered Trilogy by developer Crytek & Saber.
CRYSIS Remastered Trilogy: (The Explanation)
CRYSIS Remastered Trilogy is the iconic works of Crytek with the help of Saber Interactive who assisted in the remaster of the Trilogy. In CRYSIS and CRYSIS 3, you take on the role of Prophet, a super soldier who is equipped with a special nanosuit that provides super strength, speed, armor, and a special cloaking ability. In CRYSIS 2, you are put into the role of a dying marine who inherits the nanosuit from Prophet.
Although each game can be purchased, downloaded, and played separately from each other, they can also be purchased and downloaded as a whole as CRYSIS Remastered Trilogy. Purchasing the trilogy as a whole will download the three games individually so you will still get three separate icons on your Switch home screen. For the sake of this EXPlay, I will be covering all three games as one due to the gameplay being rather familiar throughout each game. As for the gameplay videos themselves, I have recorded gameplay footage for each game and they can be viewed towards the end of this EXPlay.
All games in the CRYSIS Remastered Trilogy are first-person shooter games situated in a sandbox environment. The player must follow a series of waypoints throughout each location and complete a list of objectives along the way. How players decide to get each object is totally up to the player. They can choose to run and gun and take out every single enemy with a rain of bullets or opt to take a stealthy approach, and use the cloak ability to sneak past or take enemies out silently.
The controls for each game are very much the same as well. To fire your weapon you press ZR, to aim down your sights you press ZL, Reload is Y and to sprint is left joystick click, and so on. All games have a tutorial of sorts. The third game for example has a separate and optional tutorial to take you through the controls in a controlled environment. The first and second game has the tutorial incorporated into the first mission so you will learn while doing. If you have played one of these games before like CRYSIS Remastered when it released earlier this year, you will already be somewhat familiar with the control scheme in the other two games.
As you progress through each game, you will be able to improve your gear and customize your weapons to suit your playstyle. You can use weapon attachments like silencers and scopes to take out enemies silently from afar but you are not restricted to just the weapons you can carry on your person. You can swap out weapons with any fallen enemy or even use mounted weapons when they are available.
All three games in the CRYSIS Remastered Trilogy are single player experiences. There isn’t an online multiplayer mode so if you are looking for a COD alternative that you can play online with friends, you won’t find it here. Instead, the CRYSIS Remastered games have a really solid single player campaign with plenty of gameplay and story to keep you motivated.
CRYSIS Remastered Trilogy on Nintendo Switch is an absolute blast to play on the console and is well worth picking up. I found the first game to be a little tricky to pick up from the start but the other two games are a lot easier to slip into. All three games seem to run very well on the Nintendo Switch and while getting these games digitally may be a deterrent for some, the fact that they are less than 30 GB togethers means that they won’t take up too much space on a decent sized micro SD card.
