Cyberpunk 2077 for next-gen is delayed even more

Cyberpunk 2077

Developer CD Projekt Red has issued a statement on the current development of the PC and current-gen console upgrades for both The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077. The company has advised that upgrades for each will now be launching later than expected in 2022.

The statement explains that the teams working on the upgrades for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077 have advised on the timings for the new release windows, indicating that those working on the upgrades are happy with them.

This is good to hear, since Cyberpunk 2077 launched far too early and was packed with bugs as a result. This became a moment for the games industry to realize that it’s much better to delay a game than it is to force it out of the door just to stick to a release window. In fact, players are far more receptive to hearing a game is being delayed for the right reasons rather than seeing it get pushed out of the door too early.

The current target for Cyberpunk 2077’s PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC upgrade launch is the first quarter of 2022. This would put it around the same time that all the other big releases are launching in early 2022, but it’s simply going to have to compete somehow.

For The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s upgrades, the release window is now the second quarter of 2022. This would place it after the initial rush of the year. This is probably a good thing, since this will be the upgrade that more fans are looking forward to.

The statement ends with a line about making these games and their upgrades right. This is the message that has been echoed by all developers in the industry since the chaotic launch of Cyberpunk 2077. It’s the message that everyone wants to hear, and it’s nice to finally see it from the developer that sparked the movement.

With so many games being delayed out of the end of 2021, it looks like the usual holiday slate of releases will be much more bare than it usually is. This will also make the early period of 2022 far busier than it usually is.
